Today, we're diving into the fundamentals: What is a low-carb diet? Simply put, a low-carb diet cuts out sugar and starchy carbs, focusing instead on healthy fats and proteins. Think: meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts, a variety of fruits, and a rainbow of vegetables. The goal is to consume less than 130g net carbs per day, adjusted to your personal health goals. For a deeper dive, watch this video on how to start a low-carb diet.​ My Low Carb Story My own low-carb journey began on January 1, 2025. At 36, weighing 73kg and pre-diabetic, I knew I needed a change. I started by eliminating sugar from my tea and coffee and gradually reducing my carb intake. Tracking my food and counting carbs became key to understanding what I was putting into my body. Why does this matter to you? Eating too much sugar and easily digestible starchy carbs rapidly increases your blood sugar, leading to a surge in insulin. Insulin then converts excess sugar into glycogen (stored sugar) for muscle energy, while the rest is converted into fat, often stored in your belly and liver. This cycle leads to drastic spikes in your blood sugar, leaving you excessively hungry, craving more food, and stuck in an unending sugar loop. Then this contributes to weight gain and increases your risk of high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, or even full-blown diabetes.
