Day 4 of Your 7-Day No Sugar Challenge

Hello Reader,

Welcome to Day 4 of your #7DayNoSugarChallenge!

You're doing an amazing job, and today we're tackling a habit that's a big source of hidden sugar for many: your daily tea and coffee.

Today, we're not just cutting out the obvious culprits like processed foods, simple carbs, sodas, and juices.

We're going a step further and removing sugar from our hot drinks. That means enjoying white tea with milk and no sugar, black or white coffee with no sugar, and black tea, just as it is.

Remember to keep drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

As you make this change, keep this in mind: “Eat slowly. Enjoy your food. This will make your eating delightful and sustainable.”

Why This Matters

It's not just about the spoonful of sugar you add to your tea. You're saying goodbye to a whole range of sugary items and refined grains that can cause your fasting blood sugar to rise.

This includes sugary drinks, juices, candy, refined grains like white chapati, white bread, white rice, crackers, breakfast cereals, and spaghetti.

By cutting these out, you're setting healthy boundaries with sugar and embracing a more sustainable lifestyle.

Your Food Focus for Today

  • Focus on: Whole, unprocessed foods. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables with each meal. Prioritize proteins, fiber, and healthy fats. Good light starch options to support your transition are berries, squashes, and sweet potatoes.
  • Cut out: All candy, cookies, biscuits, cake, and pizza. Be aware of hidden sugars in ready-made meals, takeaways, and sauces like sweet and sour, sweet chili, and some salad dressings.

Meal Ideas for Day 4

  • Breakfast: Ditch the sugary breakfast cereals. Opt for low-sugar options like plain wheat biscuit cereals, plain porridge, or plain natural yogurt. If you have cereals, have them without added sugar. Swap white bread for 1-2 slices of wholemeal bread without jam, honey, or chocolate spread.
  • Main Meals: Be cautious with ready-made meals and takeaways, as they can contain surprisingly high amounts of sugar. For snacks and desserts, choose fresh whole fruits, unsalted mixed nuts and seeds, or plain Greek yogurt.
  • Drinks: Cut out beer, fizzy drinks, sweetened juices, and milkshakes. Your new go-to is water! And, of course, no sugar in your tea or coffee.

7 Tips for a Sugar-Free Day

  1. Start Slowly: Begin by cutting out cakes, muffins, brownies, candy, and sugary beverages, then slowly reduce the added sugar from your tea.
  2. Read Labels: Check product labels for sneaky added sugars and simple carbs.
  3. Avoid Simple Carbs: Say no to white flour, spaghetti, white rice, and white bread.
  4. Don’t Drink Your Sugar: Avoid soda, energy drinks, specialty coffees, sweetened teas, and fruit juices.
  5. Eat Whole Foods: Fill your plate with vegetables, fruits, lean meat, poultry, fish, whole grains, legumes, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, milk, and plain yogurt. And drink plenty of water!
  6. Plan Your Meals: Create a meal plan and a shopping list. A well-stocked kitchen of healthy foods is your best defense.
  7. Keep Learning: Research the benefits of a low-sugar, whole-food diet to stay motivated.

Ingredients:

  • 1 caramel tea bag
  • 1 small whole lemon
  • Medium-sized ginger root, sliced
  • Cinnamon spice

Instructions:

  1. Peel the ginger root and slice it into pieces.
  2. Place the ginger in a pot with water and bring it to a boil. Let it boil for up to 10 minutes.
  3. Filter the ginger water into your cup.
  4. Add the caramel tea bag, a slice of lemon, and a dash of cinnamon.

Enjoy your homemade herbal tea with a side of scrambled eggs or an omelet, or with plain yogurt, nuts, and seeds. A handful of berries, a banana, or an apple would also be a great accompaniment.
